HB112 Refunds in Georgia: Half a Million Residents to Get Up to $500 in Tax Surplus

If you filed your state taxes in Georgia, there’s good news.

A new round of surplus tax refund payments is now being distributed, thanks to strong state revenues and a budget surplus.

Backed by House Bill 112, this initiative sets aside up to $1.2 billion to return money directly to eligible taxpayers.

It’s not a stimulus, but it sure feels like one—especially if you’re among the hundreds of thousands of Georgians receiving up to $500.

Who Is Eligible for the Georgia 2025 Tax Refund?

To qualify for the bonus tax refund:

  • You must have filed Georgia state tax returns for 2023 and 2024

  • You must have submitted your return by May 1, 2025, or October 15 if you requested an extension

  • You must not have any outstanding state tax debts

  • You can qualify whether you're a full-time resident, a part-year resident, or even a nonresident with financial ties to the state

This refund program is available to both individuals and families who meet the filing and compliance criteria.

How Much Can You Receive?

The amount of your tax refund depends on your filing status:

  • Single filers or married filing separately: up to $250

  • Head of household: up to $375

  • Married filing jointly: up to $500

These amounts apply if you had a tax liability for the relevant years. If not, your refund may be smaller.

How and When Are Refunds Paid?

The Georgia Department of Revenue began issuing payments in June 2025.

Most refunds are being sent via direct deposit, but paper checks are available if you selected that option when filing.

If you filed on time, expect to receive your refund within 6 to 8 weeks after your return was processed.

As of mid-June, over 476,000 refunds have already gone out, totaling about $148 million.

Need to Check Your Payment Status?

To track your refund, Georgia offers the Surplus Tax Refund Checker on its official website. You’ll need:

  • Your SSN or ITIN

  • Your 2023 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)

Watch for the deposit to appear as “GASTTAXRFD” in your bank statement. That label simply means Georgia State Tax Refund.

If you haven’t received your payment yet, don’t panic.

The Department of Revenue asks residents to allow up to 8 weeks before inquiring, as payments are being processed in batches.
